Journal Entry Samples

Throughout my project, I kept a journal and recorded experiences through my journey. I've listed three samples below of lessons and concepts I taught.

Journal Entry #1
Today we introduced the students to the concept of three different level changes: high, medium, and low. We began the activity by playing the “animal game”. This game is a variation of freeze-dance, where the students pick what animal they want to be. After they picked their animal (which was a bear) the student volunteers asked the question, “How would a bear move on a low level? If the bear had to crawl through the forest, how would he act?” It was really interesting to see how the students responded to the instruction (which was very well) and the creative ways in which they moved.

Journal Entry #2
After we introduced the concept of level changes, we then introduced the concept of time. We still played the “animal game”, and we still used the level changes. However, this time we asked them, “How would a bear move if he was low to the ground and he was stuck in mud? Would he move fast or slow?” The students interpreted it in their own way and showed how the speed of which the animal would move.

Journal Entry #3

Today I was able to combine the previous two concepts that were introduced a few weeks ago into choreography for the students. The choreography included level changes, difference in time, and also applied basic dance concepts such as a pliƩ, chasse, and leap. The students really enjoyed it and it was fun to watch!
