Project Summary

I volunteered at an after school dance program called “Wee Be Groovin’” at East Elementary School in Cedar City, Utah. Through my project, I was able to teach the students a particular set of choreography and have them be able to perform it in front of their parents. While teaching them choreography, I was also able to work with other volunteers through the program and teach basic dance concepts and terminology.

Project Highlights

A particular highlight I enjoyed from my project was finding different methods in teaching dance that worked especially well for myself and the students. Because I am a Dance Education major, this was very beneficial to my education as well as pertaining to my career field.

From My Journal

An example of the highlight I mentioned above can be found in one of my journal entries, which I also included in my blog as well. I had previously introduced concepts of level changes as well as changes in time. On this day (that I recorded), I was able to combine them while using ballet terminology. It was really exciting to see a theory that worked in my teaching as well as having the students respond well to it.

“Today I was able to combine the previous two concepts that were introduced a few weeks ago into choreography for the students. The choreography included level changes, difference in time, and also applied basic dance concepts such as a plié, chasse, and leap. The students really enjoyed it and it was fun to watch!”
