Date (Semester/Year): Spring semester of 2014 (middle of February)

collaborating with you on this project: Alex Nielson (service leader for
the Wee Be Groovin’ program)
Abstract: My
proposed Community Engagement project is to work with the after school dance
program Wee Be Groovin’ at East Elementary. Through my project, I will teach
the students I am working with a piece of choreography that I have created
myself. After the process of a few weeks, the students will have the
opportunity to present the choreography they have learned to their parents/
friends. After their performance, students should understand basic dance
terminology and concepts. The students will also learn how to follow
choreography and perform in front of a live audience. My goal for this project
is to help the students involved in the program learn more about dance in
general, find a passion for the arts, and work/communicate with their peers.
Above all, I want the students to have fun!
Project Details:
-This project
connects with my personal motivations because I am pursuing a degree at
Southern Utah University in Dance Education. Through this experiential
education, I am hoping to gain more knowledge in the teaching field and
rediscover my passion for the arts.
-My project ties in with community engagement because I am
working with the students from East Elementary, and also volunteers from SUU.
Although they are children, they are still members of the community and I am
excited to get the chance to work with them. Also, the children will have the
opportunity to invite their parents and other members of the community to watch
them dance.
Project timeline:
Nov. 25- I will contact Alex Nielson (who is in charge of
Wee Be Groovin’) and set up a date for when I should come in (at the beginning
of next semester) and volunteer to work with the students. We will also set up
a date for the day when I can start teaching choreography to the students and
have them perform it. I will also contact the Community Engagement Center to
see if they have a sound system I will be able to use (such as a portable
stereo, etc.)
Dec. 2- I will start looking at appropriate songs to use for
my choreography
Dec. 4- By this date, I should already have a song ready to
use to teach. I will also start working on choreography on this date.
Dec. 6- All choreography should be completed by this date.
Jan. 3- Begin preparing lesson for students, making sure all
choreography is set and music is ready and cut (if needed).
Jan. 6 (tentative) - Attend Wee Be Groovin’ after school
program and begin my project.
Week of Jan. 6-27 (tentative) - Teach students choreography
within the given hour and day that the program is held after school. Answer any
questions the students have and work with them to perfect the choreography.
Second week of February (tentative) – Select a day within
the first week of February to allow the students to perform the choreography
for their parents and friends who wish to come see them. Complete project.
*Dates are tentative and subject to change on account of
permission from Alex and East Elementary
Project budget:
Expenses
The expenses needed for my project will be very little in
amount. The only thing that I will need to purchase will be treats to give to
my students after class. The treats that I will be providing will be Kellogg’s
Rice Krispy Treats and Fruit By The Foot Tie-Dye Rolls.
Kellogg’s Mini Squares Original Rice Krispy Treats:
1 box (40 count) from Walmart= $10.00 (approximately)
Fruit By The Foot Tie-Dye Rolls:
1 box (6 count) from Walmart= $2.00 (approximately)
Depending on the amount of students that I will be teaching,
I will need to buy about two boxes of the rice krispy treats and three boxes of
the fruit roll snacks, totaling to approximately $26.00.
*Transportation to/from the school will be in the form of
carpooling, and will have no cost.
Revenue
The revenue I will be receiving for this project will be
coming from my own pocket. The income I make from my teaching job (at a local
dance studio, The Point Dance Studio) will be funding this project. My
paychecks average around $120.00/month
which will be more than enough to cover expenses.
Personal Strengths:
-A personal strength that I have is that I can communicate
very well with others. I will find this to my benefit in this project because I
will have the skills to communicate efficiently to my students as well as to my
peers that are volunteering with the program.
-Another personal strength that I have is the knowledge of
dance terminology. Because I have been trained in dance for thirteen years, I
have acquired the skills to teach others proper technique and form. This way,
the students will get the most knowledge and information they can about dance
through my project.
Personal Weaknesses:
-A weakness that I have is that I am not very patient. To
overcome this weakness, I will need to focus on my students and go through the
dance terminology and choreography slowly. This will only be fair to each and
every student that I am working with, so that no child is lost or confused.
